Medal accompanied by photocopied extracts from Queen's South Africa Medal Roll, Boer War Casualty Roll, Medal Index Card and Silver War Badge Roll. Brownlee was wounded in action at Colenso, 15th December 1899. He saw service during the First World War with the 7th Battalion Scots Fusiliers, and first saw active service in France entering that theatre of operations on 10th July 1915 (the 7th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers landed as a unit at Boulogne on 9th July 1915). Warrant Office William Brownlee was discharged on 31st October 1916 (entitled Silver War Badge).
