Gunner M McCann, 152 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery
152 Field Regiment, R.A. (Ayrshire Yeomanry Signaller to 4 Company Coldstream Guards when he won his Military Medal near Poggio Mirteto Italy in July 1944
The Immediate award was announced in the London Gazette on the 5th of December 1944.
The citation reads as follows
On the evening of 9 June 1944, Gnr McCann, a signaler, was in a O.P. Party accompanying 4 coy, 2 Coidm Gds in their advance along the road to Poggio Mireto. The company took up positions on high ground to the right of the road with the company HQ. in a quarry at the base of the hill. It was impossible to reach by tank, so the O.P. Officer and Gnr McCann went forward on foot with a 38 set. Heavy shelling and neblwerfer was virtually continious, When they reached Coy HQ, they found the 38 set was not through to the Tank. The Infantry set was out of touch with the battalion. It was essential to establish communications, Gnr McCann went back through the shelling to the tank and re-established communications. These failed again shortly after he made his way back to the Coy HQ. in the Quarry. Again, he made the double journey on foot, through the heavy fire, which had become even more intense. throughout the night and the next day, Gnr McCann manned his set, transmitting fire orders cooly and correctly, ignoring his own safety in his determination to do his job
