From a few G.E.C. Friends to commemorate Meritorious Distinction in France 1918
Gazette Information: Gazette No. 30862. M.C. With reference to the awards conferred as announced in the London Gazette dated 26th March, 1918, the following are the statements of service for which the decorations were conferred. Awarded the Military Cross. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He carried out many reconnaissances, always flying a long distance over the enemy's lines or over entirely new country. He invariably obtained successful photographs and brought back valuable information. He showed great keenness and determination at his work.
("The Sky Their Battlefield") mentions 1 aircraft from 25 Squadron that was lost on the 26th March 1918.
A DH4 (A7526), on a bombing operation, was shot up by machine gun fire over Bapaume and forced to land.
2Lt CJ Fitzgibbon was wounded but 2Lt RW Hobbs MC escaped ok.
The aircraft was left at 6:40am and burnt out.
RFC Communiqué number 125:
The weather was fine but mist and ground haze prevailed.
Twelve reconnaissances were carried out - four by the 1st Brigade, and one, a long distance photographic reconnaissance of line Valenciennes – Busigny, when 31 plates were exposed, by 2nd-Lieuts Wright and Hobbs, No 25 Squadron (9th Wing).
