The Battle of Gingindlovu (2 April 1879): Six companies of the 3rd Battalion formed a crucial part of Lord Chelmsford's relief column. They held the vulnerable north face of the laager and bore the brunt of the heavy Zulu "chest" attack. Their steady rifle fire helped repel the assault, resulting in a British victory.
Relief of Eshowe: Immediately following Gingindlovu, the battalion participated in the lifting of the Siege of Eshowe.
Unlike most British line infantry who wore traditional red coats, the 60th Rifles wore distinctive dark green uniforms ("greenjackets").
After the campaign against King Cetshwayo concluded, the battalion remained in South Africa on garrison duty and subsequently fought in the First Anglo-Boer War (including actions at the Ingogo River and Majuba Hill
